Difference Between: Creative Writing vs. Content Writing vs. Copywriting
For those unfamiliar with me, I am Enigma, a content writer who occasionally writes on LinkedIn. I am a full-time student, as well as a writer and a poet. As writing is my field of specialization, I would like to share my understanding of the difference between copywriting, content writing, and creative writing. This knowledge is crucial in today's internet world, especially for those who plan to build a startup or a small business, as it will help you network better. Don't worry; I won't bore you with technicalities. This is just what I have learned from my experience as a content writer and a writing community moderator.
Let's start with creative writing. It's pretty straightforward. It's a written piece using your creative imagination. It's penning down your thoughts, literally. All weird and obscure thoughts we have can be penned down as a poem, story, or monologue. It's often seen as an informal form of writing, and following grammar and syntax is not necessary. The writer can write in their own way, and the readers are free to interpret it in their own way, and that's the beauty of creative writing.
Now, let's move on to content writing and copywriting. Content writing is a longer form of writing, which can range anywhere from a paragraph to a 1000-2000 words long article. Typically, grammar and syntax are important, and we usually use formal language. It's generally used to promote a business or a service and can be seen as a marketing tool. Another thing to note about content writing is that we must pay attention to SEO, which is the use of keywords to make your article more visible and reach out to more people.
Lastly, copywriting is a mix of creative writing and content writing. Do you know the taglines or the titles we see online or on TV? Yes, that's copywriting. It is basically using a few words to catch the audience's attention. Hiring a good copywriter is one of the easiest ways to increase your reach organically. There is much more creative freedom, and be a little more creative and use weird words to make it sound funny. Yes, it is still seen as a formal form of writing and a branding tool, but it's not so strict.
